Cosphaderm® Tapmix is a natural, COSMOS-certified antioxidant blend. It consists of rapeseed tocopherols, ascorbyl palmitate and organic sunflower lecithin. This blend can be used both to protect the oil phase of the formulation and as an active ingredient to protect the membrane lipids of human skin. Cosphaderm® Tapmix is suitable for all formulations containing oils or waxes and can also be used in the food industry. The mixture is liquid and highly soluble at room temperature.
Composition of tocopherols
One major advantage is the composition of vitamin E. We use natural rapeseed tocopherols for this mixture, which are similar in composition to sunflower and soy tocopherols. A comparison of the compositions is shown in Table 1. For more in-depth background information on the various sources and compositions of vitamin E, we have a very interesting story with a video: „Tocopherol – The most powerful natural antioxidant„.
| Source | Can be used as | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sunflower | 67 % | 3 % | - | Bioactive for human skin |
| Soy bean | 0 - 14 % | 35 - 47 % | 7 - 22 % | Protection of the lipid phase of formulations |
| rapeseed | 26 % | 35 - 47 % | 1 - 4 % | Bioactive for human skin and protection of the lipid phase of formulations |
The balanced composition of rapeseed tocopherols allows them to be used both as antioxidants for the human body and for the fat phase of formulations.
The second active ingredient of Cosphaderm® Tapmix is ascorbyl palmitate (AP), which is known as a powerful booster for antioxidant efficacy. AP is able to regenerate tocopherol, thereby increasing its efficiency (Fig. 1).

Lecithin as a problem solver
The disadvantage of AP is its low solubility. High temperatures are required to dissolve AP in the oil phase of a formulation. However, high temperatures are counterproductive for sensitive oils. Cosphaderm® Tapmix contains a third ingredient that acts as a natural emulsifier for AP. This lecithin, extracted from sunflowers, makes Tapmix very easy to process and dissolve at room temperature. Lecithins are also phospholipids, which are an important component of human membranes. In addition to their emulsifying properties, they are excellent skin and hair care products.
Finally, the antioxidant potential of Cosphaderm® Tapmix with alpha-tocopherol extracted from sunflowers, beta-gamma- and delta-tocopherol extracted from soybeans, and with AP (Fig. 2). 0.80 % Tapmix consists of a maximum of 0.15 % tocopherol from rapeseed.
Rancimat test results

The Rancimat test clearly shows that soybean tocopherols (T70 NON GMO ECO) are more effective than sunflower tocopherols (E1000 Sunflower) in protecting the oil from oxidation. However, 0.10 % AP as a single antioxidant does not show a significant improvement in induction time. The best results were achieved by using Cosphaderm® Tapmix as an antioxidant. The tocopherol content in 0.80 % Cosphaderm® Tapmix is lower than in 0.20 % tocopherol, which clearly demonstrates the strong amplifying effect of AP.
