Cosphaderm® Tapmix
a smart, antioxidant Blend based on Natural Rapeseed Tocopherols

Cosphaderm® Tapmix is a natural, COSMOS-approved anti-oxidative blend comprising rape-tocopherols, ascorbyl palmitate and organic sunflower lecithin. You can use it for protecting the oil phase of the formulation and the membrane lipids of human skin.

Cosphaderm® Tapmix is suitable for all formulations that contain oils or waxes and food. The blend is liquid and easy to dissolve at room temperature.

Composition of Tocopherols

One big benefit is the composition of Vitamin E. We are using natural rape-seed tocopherols for this blend because they are in between sunflower and soy bean tocopherols regarding their composition. A comparison of the compositions is shown in table 1. For deeper background information regarding the different Vitamin E sources and compositions, please take a look at our Story “Tocopherol – The Most Powerful Natural Antioxidant”.

The balanced composition of rape-seed tocopherols allows using them both as an antioxidant for the human body, and for the fat phase of formulations.

The second active ingredient of Cosphaderm® Tapmix is ascorbyl palmitate (AP) which is well known as a strong booster for the antioxidative efficiency. AP is able to regenerate tocopherol and to increase the efficiency (fig. 1)

Lecithin as Problemsolver

The disadvantage of AP is its low solubility. To dissolve AP in the oil phase of a formulation, you need high temperatures, but high temperatures are counterproductive for sensitive oils. For this reason, Cosphaderm® Tapmix contains a third ingredient that acts as a natural emulsifier for AP. A sunflower-derived lecithin allows a very easy processing and dissolving of Cosphaderm® Tapmix at room temperature. Lecithins are phospholipids, which are an important part of human membranes. Besides their emulsifying properties, they are excellent skin and hair conditioners.

Finally, we compared the anti-oxidative potential of Cosphaderm® Tapmix to sunflower-derived alpha tocopherol, soy-bean derived beta-gamma, delta tocopherol and to AP (Fig. 2). 0.80 % Tapmix comprises max 0.15 % rape-seeded tocopherol.

Rancimat Test Results
Figure 2: Rancimat test results. Method parameters: continuously airflow = 19 litres per hour; temperature = 100°C. The pure oil without an additional antioxidant was the reference. E1000 sunflower = sunflower-derived alpha tocopherol; T70 NON GMO (ECO) = soy-bean derived tocopherol.

The rancimat test clearly shows that soy-bean tocopherols (T70 NON GMO ECO) are more efficient to protect the oil against oxidation compared to sunflower tocopherols (E1000 sunflower), whereas 0.10 % AP as a single antioxidant does not show a strong improvement of the induction time. We could achieve the best results by using Cosphaderm® Tapmix as an antioxidant. The content of tocopherol in 0.80 % Cosphaderm® Tapmix is lower than 0.20 % tocopherol which reveals the strong boosting effect of AP.
